The Buffalo’s Neighborhoods Exhibit Wins the SLAM! Idea Showcase

The Buffalo & Erie County Public Library and the Western New York Genealogical Society have been announced as the winners of the National Genealogical Society’s SLAM! Idea Showcase for the collaborative digital exhibit, Buffalo’s Neighborhoods: Exploring Our Migrant & Immigrant Heritage.

The showcase recognizes innovative initiatives by societies, libraries, archives, museums, and other institutions (SLAM). The Showcase is meant to share creative ideas for organizations to emulate, to promote collaborations and collegiality amongst organizations, and to strengthen the genealogy and family history community.

Buffalo’s Neighborhoods: Exploring Our Migrant & Immigrant Heritage is an online exhibit. It features historical narratives about Buffalo’s diverse ethnic neighborhoods, their imprint on the region and their contributions to the rich fabric of our city. The exhibit is illuminated by a digital archive of photographs, newspaper clippings, maps, books, church records, and historical artifacts.

The following local genealogical and cultural organizations graciously contributed content:

  • The Buffalo Genealogy Society of the African Diaspora
  • The Buffalo Irish Genealogical Society
  • The Hispanic Heritage Council
  • The Iroquois Genealogy Society
  • The Italian Genealogical Society of Western New York
  • The Jewish Buffalo History Center
  • The Polish Genealogical Society of New York State
  • Trinity Old Lutheran Church
